WYTHEVILLE –– Grayson County’s girls had a decent week and went 2-2 during that span, including a 52-42 win Thursday at Holston, but the Blue Devils struggled Friday night at George Wythe and incurred a 46-18 Mountain Empire District loss to the Maroons.

Galax 53, Giles 23: The Maroon Tide held the Spartans to eight points over the final three quarters and took the easy MED win Friday in Galax.
The two teams were tied at 15 after the first quarter but Galax pulled out to a 25-20 lead by halftime. The Maroon Tide then outscored Giles 28-3 in the second half.
Saige Leonard and Jayden Leonard each scored 12 points to lead Galax while Karsyn Reed’s 16 led the Spartans.

Carroll (18-1) finished the quarter on a 5-0 run and outscored Floyd 22-10 in the second to begin the rout.
Jaelyn Hagee scored 18 points while Alyssa Ervin and Kalee Easter added 11 apiece for the Cavaliers.

Galax 37, Fort Chiswell 34: The Maroon Tide held the Pioneers to 11 first-half points and staved off a fourth-quarter charge to notch an MED win last Tuesday in Galax.
Galax never trailed after opening with a 5-0 run but Fort Chiswell, held to 16 points through three quarters, scored 18 in the fourth to close the gap. The Pioneers had an open 3-pointer bounce away in the final seconds.
Galax’s Lena King was the only player for either team to reach double figures, scoring 12 points, while Sturgill and Saige Leonard added nine points each.

Grayson County 37, Giles 29: The Blue Devils picked up their first district win of the season Monday night, rallying to defeat the Spartans in an MED game in Independence.
Grayson County trailed 23-22 after three quarters before outscoring the Spartans 15-6 over the final eight minutes to pull away for the win.
Kylie Pope scored 15 points for Grayson County to lead all scorers and Layliah Phipps added 10 points for the Blue Devils.

George Wythe 61, Grayson County 46: The Maroons broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and went on to snag the MED win Friday in Wytheville.
Grayson County trailed just 34-31 heading into the fourth quarter but George Wythe pumped in 27 fourth-period points to win going away.
Holden Cassell hit all four of Grayson’s 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points. Ty Campbell knocked down five treys and scored 19 for Wythe, which got 13 points from Trey Rainey.

After opening up a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, Grayson County extended its advantage to 29-10 by halftime and to 47-15 by the start of the fourth quarter.
Eli Gillespie was the only scorer in double figures, dumping in 22 points for the Blue Devils.

Grayson County opened a 14-point lead in the first quarter and extended that to a 43-10 advantage by halftime.
Eli Gillespie led four Blue Devils in double figures with 17 points and also dished seven assists. Holden Cassell scored 15 points, Andrew Shaffner added 12 and Austin Dowell chipped in 10.

Fort Chiswell 53, Galax 40: The Maroon Tide overcame a sluggish start to make it a ballgame by halftime but the Pioneers controlled the early part of the second half and pulled away to a 53-40 MED last Tuesday In Galax.
The Maroon Tide was limited to two points in the game’s first 9:05 and trailed 18-6 before Shawn Peterkin scored 10 points in the final 4:24 of the half. Adam Dillon added a late 3-pointer as the Galax got to within 21-19 by halftime.
Fort Chiswell ended any comeback hopes with an 18-9 run in the third quarter.
Shawn Peterkin led all scorers with 21 points for Galax while Silas Watson and Reed Dunford paced Fort with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
