A family of six lost their home and belongings in a fire on March 8.
The residence was a total loss, according to a report from the Independence Volunteer Fire Department. The family includes the parents and four children, ranging in age from 3 to 13.
The IVFD, Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad and Grayson Sheriff’s Office responded to the residential structure fire off of Loggers Lane, with Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Sparta-Alleghany (N.C.) Fire Department providing mutual aid, the report said.
The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross and Grayson County Public Schools. The school system has posted a list of clothing needs:
• Mom — shirts: medium; pants: medium or size 6 (maternity clothes needed); shoes: size 6.5;
• Dad — shirts: large; pants: large or 34/34; shoes: size 7;
• Boy (age 13) — clothes: adult S/M; shoes: men’s size 8.5;
• Girl (age 7) — clothes: girls 10/12; shoes: girl’s size 2;
• Girl (age 6) — clothes: girls 7/8; shoes: toddler’s size 12;
• Girl (age 3) — clothes: girls 7/8; shoes: toddler’s size 12.
Other items needed include cleaning supplies, hygiene items, non-perishable food and laundry detergent.
Independence Elementary School thanked the community for their generosity in a social media post. “If you wish to make a monetary gift, you can drop off cash or a check written out to Independence Elementary School,” IES posted. “Again, we would like to thank everyone for their wonderful community support.”
